About the Game to Overtime Prop Bet

Decide whether or not an NFL game will go to overtime. Bet “No” if you think the game will end after regulation time, or bet “Yes” if you think overtime play will be required to determine a winner.

The most likely outcome, or favorite side, will have minus odds. In most cases, this will be “No”. A minus value indicates how much you risk to win $100. If the odds for “No” are -2000, you’d risk $2,000 to win $100. Similarly, if the odds are -1600, you’d risk $1600 to win $100.

The less likely outcome, or underdog side, will have plus odds. This will usually be the case for “Yes”. A plus value indicates how you much win if you risk $100. If the odds for “Yes” are +800, you’d win $800 for risking $100. Likewise, if the odds are +2500, you’d win $2,500 for a $100 bet.

Most of the time, odds for each side will be far apart. For example, “Yes” might be +1000 and “No” -2800. Odds will be closer when there’s a fair chance a game will go to overtime.

Current NFL Overtime Rules

The following are current NFL overtime rules for both regular season and playoff games. There’s a big difference between the two when it comes to overtime.

Regular season games only have one overtime period before ending in a tie. NFL playoff games cannot end in a tie. That means a playoff game could potentially have multiple overtimes until a winner is determined.

Regular Season Overtime Rules

If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, a 3 minute intermission will be held before a 10 minute overtime period. The referee will toss a coin to determine who will possess the ball first. The visiting team’s captain calls the toss.

There can only be one 10 minute overtime per regular season game. Each team must have the chance to possess the ball unless a team scores a touchdown on the opening (or first) possession. If this happens, the game ends and the team that scored wins the game. Otherwise, sudden death play continues until a team scores a field goal, touchdown, or a safety.

For example, if the team with first possession scores a field goal, the opposing team then has a chance to possess the ball. If the opposing team scores a field goal, the game remains tied and the other team gets to possess the ball again. However, if the opposing team scores a touchdown, the other team must then score on the next possession, or else they’ll lose the game.

The extra point after touchdown is attempted unless the team with the opening possession scores a touchdown, in which case they win the game.

If the score is still tied after 10 minutes, the game results in a tie. There are a couple other rules to consider. One, each team gets two timeouts. Two, there are no instant replay coach’s challenges. Only the replay official can initiate reviews.

Playoff Overtime Rules

Keeping the regular season overtime rules in mind, playoff game overtime – including the Super Bowl – has some important rule modifications. Note that the 3 minute break following regulation time and the coin toss procedure to determine first possession are the same.

NFL playoff overtime is essentially a new game. Overtime periods last 15 minutes, just a like a quarter of a game. Two overtimes comprise a half. Each team gets 3 timeouts per half.

If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period, or if the second team’s possession has not concluded, the teams will play another overtime. Play continues indefinitely until a winner is determined. There’s a 2 minute intermission between each overtime period.

The team captain who lost the first overtime coin toss must make an important decision for the second overtime: possess the ball or choose which goal he wants to defend. This choice doesn’t apply if the team that won the coin toss deferred the choice to the second overtime. In most cases, the team that won the toss will choose to possess the ball so they can potentially end the game on a touchdown. Deferring is a less common alternative.

Each team gets an opportunity to possess the ball during overtime. Also, timing rules that govern play at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters of an ordinary game apply.

If there’s still no winner after 4 overtimes, another coin toss is held and the same process repeats itself until a winner is determined.
