Current EPL Betting Odds and Lines

The Premier League, commonly known as the EPL, is the highest level of soccer in the English Football League. The English Premiership is the most-watched sports league in the world, reaching a potential television audience of 4.7 billion people worldwide. The 2021-22 championship game was seen by 2.2 million in the United States.

Unlike top sports leagues in North America, teams must qualify to play in the Premier League each season. Of the 20 teams, only the top 17 return. The bottom 3 are relegated, or demoted, to the English Football League (EFL) championship. The relegated teams are replaced by the top 3 teams from the EFL for the next season. The English Football League system uses relegation and promotion to fill the ranks of its leagues. This allows the best teams to eventually move up to the Premier League.

The top four teams from the Premier League qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which is a 32-team tournament that crowns the top team in Europe. Teams 5, 6 and potentially 7 enter the Europa League, a 64-team tournament.

EPL betting is popular worldwide and in the United States as well, despite competition from various domestic sports leagues like the NFL and NBA.

EPL Premier League Bets

Soccer may be low-scoring, but there are several ways to place a bet on a soccer match. We detail them here.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a simple bet where you try and predict the final outcome of the match. Wager on either team to win or choose a draw with a 3-way moneyline bet. You can also wager on either team to win with a 2-way moneyline bet, where a draw would result in a push and your bet being refunded.

3-Way Moneyline Bet

The 3-way moneyline is one of the most popular EPL bets due to draws being a consistent outcome in soccer. You can choose either team to win or bet on a draw.

Sportsbooks determine the likelihood of each outcome along with how the public might bet on a matchup to set the odds. But if the public takes more action on one of the three outcomes than expected, sportsbooks will adjust the odds accordingly.

3-Way Moneyline Example

Manchester United -165
Tottenham +450
Draw +330

In this example, Manchester United winning is the most likely outcome. The minus sign before the odds indicate their status as the betting favorite. A minus before the number means you have to risk $165 to win $100 on Man U.

A plus sign ahead of the odds indicates an underdog outcome. A bet on Tottenham to win is the most unlikely result according to oddsmakers. A Hotspur win would pay $450 on a $100 bet.

The odds for a draw in this case are +330, so bet $100 to win $330 in case of a tie.

Note that a game’s outcomes can all have plus values. In this case, the favorite would be the lowest value. In the following example, Arsenal is the +115 favorite. Crystal Palace is +250, considered slightly less likely than a draw at +245.

Arsenal +115
Crystal Palace +250
Draw +245

2-Way Moneyline Bet (aka “Tie No Bet”)

As we touched on above, the 2-way aspect of this moneyline bet means there are two outcomes instead of three. This bet takes the draw out of the equation, as you would get your initial bet amount back in case of a tie. Hence, this bet is also called a 2-Way Tie No Bet.

2-Way Moneyline Bet Example

Manchester United -425
Tottenham +310

Using the same game as our first 3-way moneyline example, you’ll see that you would have to risk a lot more to win the same amount on a bet for Manchester United. That’s because a draw isn’t a losing outcome here.

In order to protect yourself from a draw, you would have to risk $425 on Man U in order to win $100. If the match is a draw, you get your $425 bet back.

On the other side, you’re also protected against a draw by betting on the Spurs. The payout for a Tottenham win decreases to $310 on a $100 bet. Again, if the final result is a draw, you get your $100 bet back.

Possible Moneyline Outcomes
  • West Ham United bettors risk $100 to win $320 at +320 odds. The implied probability for West Ham United is 23.81%.
  • Newcastle United bettors risk $100 to win $75.76 at -132 odds. The implied probability for Newcastle United is 56.9%.
  • Draw bettors risk $100 to win $325 at +325 odds. The implied probability for Draw is 23.53%.

Totals Bet (Over-Under)

A totals bet is where oddsmakers set a specific number of goals to be scored in the match. You bet whether the final result will be over or under that number.

It’s important to note that the number set for a totals bet isn’t the number of goals oddsmakers think will be scored. Rather, it’s the number of goals oddsmakers think will cause equal betting on both sides of their line. This ensures a sportsbook doesn’t take too much of a loss on a certain result.

Totals Bet Example

Manchester City 2.5 o -110
Chelsea 2.5 u -110

Here, you would be betting on whether the total number of goals in this match would go over or under 2.5.

The -110 next to each number indicates the odds. You would need to bet $110 to win $100 in either case. Sometimes, oddsmakers will adjust the odds if they believe betting on one side will be heavier than the other.

You’ll notice that the odds here are the same for each side, but you have to risk more than you can win. This $10 difference is called the vig or juice. Sportsbooks use losing bets to pay the winners.

When there’s an equal amount of betting on each side, the book gets a profit of $10 on each losing bet. Think of the vig as a service fee. It allows the sportsbook a better chance to profit and also ensures that your bet will be paid out in case you win.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet (Soccer Point Spread)

The Asian handicap, or goal line bet, is placing a wager on the matchup with a point spread like a hockey puck line or baseball run line. Teams are typically favored by half goal, but more lopsided matchups have been known to have spreads of 1.5 or 2.5 on the goal line.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet Example

Arsenal -0.5 -110
Fulham FC +0.5 -110

In this example, a bet on Arsenal would only be successful if the Gunners win by 1 or more goals.

Betting on Fulham gives you two ways to win. If the Cottagers win outright, you win. If the final result is a draw, you also win. That +0.5 goal line means Fulham can’t lose by more than 1 goal. It includes the possibility of a draw.

If the goal line were -1.5 in favor of Arsenal, the bet would only be a winner if Arsenal were to win the match by two or more goals.

Asian Handicap Split Bet (Split Goal Line Bet)

Asian handicap split lines, or split goal lines, are written in quarter goal increments of 0.25 or 0.75. Examples include 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 or 1.75.

Whenever you see a split line, you’re actually making 2 bets at once. Your wager will be equally split between the two closest half line numbers with the same odds.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Example

Here’s how a $120 bet on Chelsea with a -0.75 -120 Asian handicap split bet works.

Chelsea -0.75 -120
Southampton +0.75 +100

The closest half number below -0.75 is -1, so $60 goes for Chelsea -1. The closest half number above -0.75 is -0.5. The other $60 goes to Southampton by -0.5.

The -120 odds determines your winning payout. Remember, a minus value is how much you risk to win $100. In this case, you are risking $120 total to win a $100 split between two different lines.

If both bets win, you get $50 for each totaling $100. If one wins and one pushes, you get $50 plus $60 refunded. And if both lose, you get $0.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Detailed Example

How much you win or lose on the Asian handicap split bet depends on the game’s final outcome. Here’s how your bet on Chelsea -0.75 at -120 odds plays out.

Chelsea wins by 2 or more goals
Both bets win. Chelsea’s 2 goal victory is greater than each bet at -0.5 and -1.

The $120 bet to win $100 was split $60 each for Chelsea -0.5 and Chelsea -1. You win $50 each for a total of $100.

Chelsea wins by 1 goal
Chelsea by -0.5 wins, Chelsea by -1 pushes. In this case, Chelsea’s 1 goal victory is only greater than the bet at -0.5.

Your $120 bet to win $100 was split 2 ways for $60 on each line, -0.5 and -1. You win $50 on the bet against -0.5 and get $60 refunded for the push against -1. Total win: $50.

Chelsea draws or loses outright
Both bets lose. A draw means a 0 goal margin of victory over Southampton. 0 is less than both -0.5 and -1.

You lose the $60 against -0.5 and the $60 against -1. Total loss: $120.

Futures Bet

A futures bet is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of betting on a single-match result, you’re placing a wager on an event in the future.

The most popular EPL futures bet is on who will be the Premier League Champion. You can also bet on which teams will finish in the top 4 or who the top goal scorer will be. At the other end of the table, you can bet on which teams will be relegated at the end of the season.

2023 Premier League Winner
Team Odds
Manchester City -160
Liverpool FC +225
Tottenham +1400
Chelsea +1600
Manchester United +2800
Arsenal +5000

Going into the 2023 EPL season, Manchester City and Liverpool FC are fairly heavy favorites to win the league. Further down, a $100 wager on Tottenham to win the championship would pay out at $1,400. Arsenal and other teams not shown with even longer odds are such heavy underdogs that they rarely hit, but it’s not impossible. In 2016, Leicester City won the Premier League with preseason odds of +5000.

You typically can bet on futures as soon as the previous season ends. As the year progresses, a variety of factors (including players joining and leaving a team, injuries, and how the team performs during the season) will influence and change the odds throughout the season.

EPL Premier League Major Events

Unlike most team sports leagues worldwide, there are no playoffs or championship game in the Premier League.

Instead, the 20 teams play the other 19 both home and away in a round-robin season format that runs from August to May. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. At the end of the 38-match season, the team that simply has the highest point total is the Premier League champion.

In case of a tie, there are four tiebreakers that are applied:

  1. Overall goal difference ([goals scored]-[goals allowed])
  2. Overall goals scored
  3. Total points in head-to-head matches between the tied clubs
  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches between the tied clubs

If the teams are still tied after all four tiebreakers, then a one-game playoff would be contested at a neutral site to break the tie.

The same procedure is used to determine the top-four teams to reach the UEFA Champions League and also the three teams that are relegated.

The Premier League championship has never been decided in a one-game playoff.

When to Bet on EPL Premier League Matches

Teams in the Premier League typically play once per week. Different betting strategies dictate whether to bet on an EPL match early or wait until closer to kickoff.

If you are really familiar with the teams, you can check the early odds and determine if there is value on a particular outcome. Review how one team has played against the other, recent matchup results, and player injuries. Jumping on a bad line can give you great value before the oddsmakers fix their mistake.

Waiting for the public to play their hand can also create value on the back end. Using this strategy, take note of the opening lines when they come out. The EPL generates the most betting action worldwide, and many of these bets come from casual bettors who are placing bets for fun.

If you’re in it for fun and to win money, consider going against public opinion. Sometimes, contrarian betting can be profitable. Back a team that is getting more favorable odds closer to match time. This means that oddsmakers are trying to entice people to bet on that side because most of the public money is going in the other direction.

Waiting until closer to kickoff also gives you time for any late injuries or other news to develop that could affect the match result.

Popular EPL Premier League Teams

Manchester United

Manchester United is the most popular EPL team, especially in the online realm where its 75 million Facebook followers are the most in all of sports (the Dallas Cowboys, for comparison’s sake, have 8 million followers). It’s also the most successful, having won 20 Premier League championships. Man U’s home grounds, Old Trafford, has been in operation since 1910 and holds over 76,000 people.

The club had most of its success under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who led the Red Devils to 13 of its 20 titles from 1993 until his retirement in 2013. Popular players for Man U include Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 220 appearances, current star Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs (12 Premier League winners medals), and David Beckham, who is one of the most popular soccer players of all time.

Manchester City

Even though the Citizens aren’t the most popular team in their city, they have been the most successful one in recent years. The club didn’t win its first Premier League championship until 2011-12, but it now owns six, including back-to-back titles in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Four of those championships have come under manager Pep Guardiola, who is 256-51 with 45 draws from 2016-22. Raheem Sterling has been with the team since 2015 and has recorded 131 goals and 74 assists in 339 games (through the end of the 2021-22 season). Kevin De Bruyne has also been with the side since 2015 and has 86 goals and 115 assists in that span.

Chelsea

There are 17 clubs in London, and Chelsea has become the most popular. The Blues have won five of its six Premier League titles since 2005 and are the only London team to have won both the UEFA Champions League and Club World Cup.

It has been redeveloped since, but Chelsea has called Stamford Bridge home since its foundation in 1905. Despite the team’s success, it changes managers rather frequently, having nine leaders since 2004. Current manager Thomas Tuchel led Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2021. Petr Cech, one of the most successful keepers in EPL history, was on Chelsea from 2004-2015 and allowed just 15 goals in his first season, which is a Premier League record that still stands today.

Arsenal

Arsenal is the second-most popular soccer team in London behind Chelsea. The Gunners have 13 Premier League titles to their credit. They play in one of the more modern venues in all of the EPL at Emirates Stadium, which holds 60,000 spectators and opened in 2006.

Arsenal’s most successful period came in the 1930s, when it won five titles in a seven-year span. The club also won two championships in the 1990s and two in the 2000s. Under manager Arsene Wenger, the team set two records: 49-straight wins from May 2003 through October 2004 and also an undefeated season in 2003-04, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished before. Its top player in that era was Thierry Henry, who scored 174 goals in 254 appearances from 1999-2007.

Liverpool

Liverpool sits just behind Manchester United in Premier League championships with 19. The Reds won their first title in 30 years in 2019-20 and finished in the runner-up spot in 2021-22. Its golden era was from 1973-90, when Liverpool won 11 titles in a 17-year span.

Roger Hunt led the team in goals for nine years in the decade of the 1960s. For the championship era, Ian Rush was the leading goal scorer several times, tallying 47 in 1983-84 alone. Michael Owen led the team in goals each year from 1997-98 through 2003-04. More recently, the star has been Mohamed Salah, who has led the EPL three times in a span of five seasons from 2017-18 to 2021-22.

Do Your Research

It’s estimated that 70% of all of the sports betting that takes place worldwide is wagered on soccer. Outside of the World Cup, the EPL is the most popular league to bet on. Because of this, oddsmakers are paying close attention to the EPL lines they’re setting. This makes it difficult to find weaknesses or value in a lot of wagers.

To counter this, you need to be as prepared as possible. Watch the matches and follow the news. Pay close attention to injury reports, suspensions, head-to-head records, and team performance in their most recent matches. How a team performed in their last three or four matches could provide more useful information than their statistics for the entire season.

Fortunately, there are plenty of websites with useful handicapping information. Handicapping is the process of studying data to make informed sports betting wagers. Here are some helpful resources:

Know What Home Field Advantage Is Worth

Soccer game scoring is limited. Therefore, any scoring advantage is in your favor. The average number of goals in Premier League match is historically about 2.5. 52.5% of EPL games over a five-season range from 2017-22 had more than 2.5 goals scored and 47.5% were under that number.

When looking at each team’s performances at home vs. away, not one club scored more goals in away matches than they did at home.

Manchester City averaged 1.19 more goals at home over the five-year span, which is the most of any team. Other high margins include Stoke City (0.95), Arsenal (0.89), and Southampton (0.89). Crystal Palace (0.02), West Bromwich Albion (0.45), and Tottenham Hotspur (0.49) were the only teams who didn’t score at least half a goal more at home.

Overall, the home team won 44.5% of the time in the five-year range with a draw occurring in 25.2% of matches. That leaves the away team winning 30.3% of the time. Doing your research and knowing when to take an away team can lead to big wins since they hit in just three of every 10 games.

Exploit Public Bias

Use public biases to increase the value of your bets. Given that 70% of all sports bets in the world are placed on soccer, you can be sure that a great many of them are being made on the favorite team to win.

So, what are the most popular teams? A quick scroll up this page will give you your answer: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Those clubs along with London-based Tottenham are known as the “Big Six” in the Premier League.

As a result, oddsmakers will nudge odds in favor of teams opposing those clubs. A bet on an opposing team may offer higher value, especially if you determine they have a real chance to win.

Another popular public bias is on the totals bet. Casual bettors like scoring and want to root for goals. They gravitate towards taking the over. However, if your research suggests a lower number of goals than the current totals odds, grab the value and take the under.
