Current Ligue 1 Betting Odds and Lines

Ligue 1 is France’s highest level of soccer and is the most popular professional sports league in the country. It goes without saying that sportsbooks have plenty of action to set Ligue 1 betting odds. Moreover, Ligue 1 ranks fifth among soccer leagues worldwide according to UEFA rankings. It is also the third most-watched soccer league with an average of 10.5 million viewers worldwide.

Ligue 1 began play in 1932. It has a format similar to other major European soccer leagues like the English Premier League and La Liga. From 2002-23, the league consisted of 20 teams. Starting in the 2023-24 season, it will drop down to 18. Each team plays the other twice. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion.

The top-three teams from Ligue 1 qualify for the UEFA Champions League, a 32-team tournament that crowns the top team in Europe. The fourth-place team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, another European tournament a tier below the Champions League.

At the end of each season, the bottom two Ligue 1 teams are relegated (demoted) to the second-tier Ligue 2. The top-two Ligue 2 teams replace them in Ligue 1. In addition, the third-place Ligue 2 team plays the third-worst Ligue 1 team in a two-leg playoff contested at each team’s home stadium. The winner plays in Ligue 1 the following season.

Four teams will be relegated and just two will be promoted for the 2022-23 season because Ligue 1 will be reduced to 18 clubs starting in 2023-24.

Ligue 1 Bets

Soccer may be a low-scoring sport, but there are quite a few ways to bet on a soccer match. Some require more explanation than others, particularly the Asian Handicap.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a simple bet where you try and predict the final outcome of the match. Wager on either team to win or choose a draw with a 3-way moneyline bet.

You can also wager on either team to win with a 2-way moneyline bet. With this bet, a draw would result in a push and your bet being refunded.

3-Way Moneyline Bet

The 3-way moneyline is one of the most popular bets due to draws being a consistent outcome in soccer. You can choose either team to win or bet on a draw.

Sportsbooks determine the likelihood of each outcome along with how the public might bet on a matchup to set the odds. If the public takes more action on one of the three outcomes than expected, sportsbooks will adjust the odds accordingly.

3-Way Moneyline Example

Paris Saint-Germain -165
Lyon +450
Draw +330

In this example, Paris Saint-Germain winning is the most likely outcome. The minus sign before the odds indicates their status as the betting favorite. A minus before the number means you have to risk $165 to win $100.

A plus sign ahead of the odds indicates an underdog outcome. A bet on Lyon to win is the most unlikely result according to oddsmakers. A Lyon win would pay $450 on a $100 bet.

The odds for a draw in this case are +330, so bet $100 to win $330 in the event of a tie.

Note that 3-way moneyline odds can all have plus values. When this occurs, the favorite would be the lowest value.

In the following example, Nice is the +115 favorite. Reims is +250, so a Reims win is considered slightly less likely than a draw at +245.

Nice +115
Reims +250
Draw +245

2-Way Moneyline Bet (aka “Tie No Bet”)

As we touched on above, the 2-way moneyline bet means there are two outcomes instead of three. This bet takes the draw out of the equation, as you would get your initial bet amount back in case of a tie. Hence, this bet is also called a 2-Way Tie No Bet.

2-Way Moneyline Bet Example

Paris Saint-Germain -425
Lyon +310

Using the same game as our first 3-way moneyline example, you’ll see that you would have to risk a lot more to win the same amount on a bet for Paris Saint-Germain. That’s because a draw isn’t a losing outcome here.

Since a draw isn’t a negative for a bettor on the 2-way moneyline, you would have to risk more to back the favored team. In this case, it’s $425 on Paris Saint-Germain to win $100. If the match is a draw, you get your $425 bet back.

On the other side, you’re also protected against a draw by betting on Lyon. The payout for a Lyon win decreases to $310 on a $100 bet. Again, if the final result is a draw, you get your $100 bet back.

Possible Moneyline Outcomes
  • Lens bettors risk $100 to win $260 at +260 odds. The implied probability for Lens is 27.78%.
  • Lille bettors risk $100 to win $107 at +107 odds. The implied probability for Lille is 48.31%.
  • Draw bettors risk $100 to win $245 at +245 odds. The implied probability for Draw is 28.99%.

Totals Bet (Over-Under)

A totals bet is where oddsmakers set a specific number of goals to be scored in the match. You bet whether the final result will be over or under that number.

It’s important to note that the number set for a totals bet isn’t the number of goals oddsmakers think will be scored. Rather, it’s the number of goals oddsmakers think will cause equal betting on both sides of their line. This ensures a sportsbook doesn’t take too much of a loss on a certain result.

Totals Bet Example

Monaco 2.5 o -110
Nantes 2.5 u -110

Here, you would be betting on whether the total number of goals in this match will go over or under 2.5.

The -110 next to each number indicates the odds. You would need to bet $110 to win $100 in either case. Sometimes, oddsmakers will adjust the odds if they believe betting on one side will be heavier than the other.

You’ll notice that the odds here are the same for each side. In either case, you have to risk more than you can win. This $10 difference is called the vig or juice. Sportsbooks use losing bets to pay the winners.

When there’s an equal amount of betting on each side, the book gets a profit of $10 on each losing bet. Think of the vig as a service fee. It allows the sportsbook a better chance to profit and also ensures that your bet will be paid out in case you win.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet (Soccer Point Spread)

The Asian handicap, or goal line bet, is placing a wager on the matchup with a point spread like a hockey puck line or baseball run line. Teams are typically favored by a half goal, but more lopsided matchups have been known to have spreads of 1.5 or 2.5 on the goal line.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet Example

Rennes -0.5 -110
Nice +0.5 -110

In this example, a bet on Rennes would only be successful if they win by 1 or more goals.

Betting on Nice gives you two ways to win. If they win outright, you win. If the final result is a draw, you also win. That +0.5 goal line means Nice can’t lose by more than 1 goal. It includes the possibility of a draw.

If the goal line were -1.5 in favor of Rennes, the bet would only be a winner if they were to win the match by two or more goals.

Asian Handicap Split Bet (Split Goal Line Bet)

Asian handicap split lines, or split goal lines, are written in quarter goal increments of 0.25 or 0.75. Examples include 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 or 1.75.

Whenever you see a split line, you’re actually making 2 bets at once. Your wager will be equally split between the two closest half-line numbers with the same odds.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Example

Here’s how a $120 bet on Marseille with a -0.75 -120 Asian handicap split bet works.

Marseille -0.75 -120
Strasbourg +0.75 +100

The closest half number below -0.75 is -1, so $60 goes for Marseille -1. The closest half number above -0.75 is -0.5. The other $60 goes to Marseille by -0.5.

The -120 odds is what determines your winning payout. Remember, a minus value is how much you risk to win $100. In this case, you are risking $120 total to win a $100 split between two different lines.

If both bets win, you get $50 for each totaling $100. If one wins and one pushes, you get $50 plus $60 refunded. And if both lose, you get $0.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Detailed Example

How much you win or lose on the Asian handicap split bet depends on the game’s final outcome. Here’s how your bet on Marseille -0.75 at -120 odds plays out.

Marseille wins by 2 or more goals
Both bets win. Marseille’s 2-goal victory is greater than each bet at -0.5 and -1.

The $120 bet to win $100 was split $60 each for Marseille -0.5 and Marseille -1. You win $50 each for a total of $100.

Marseille wins by 1 goal
Marseille by -0.5 wins, Marseille by -1 pushes. In this case, Marseille’s 1-goal victory is only greater than the bet at -0.5.

Your $120 bet to win $100 was split 2 ways for $60 on each line, -0.5 and -1. You win $50 on the bet against -0.5 and get $60 refunded for the push against -1. Total win: $50.

Marseille draws or loses outright
Both bets lose. A draw means a 0-goal margin of victory over Strasbourg, and 0 is less than both -0.5 and -1.

You lose the $60 against -0.5 and the $60 against -1. Total loss: $120.

Futures Bet

A futures bet is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of betting on a single-match result, you’re placing a wager on an event in the future.

The most popular Ligue 1 futures bet is for the league’s champion. You can also bet on individual honors like who the season’s top goal scorer will be.

2023 Ligue 1 Winner
Team Odds
Paris Saint-Germain -900
Lyon +1600
Marseille +2000
Monaco +2500
Rennes +4000
Lille +6600
Nice +8000
Lens +15000

All teams will almost always have plus odds, so the smallest number would indicate the favorite. In the case of the upcoming Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain is such a large favorite, that they’re listed at -900–meaning you have to bet $900 in order to win $100 if they win the league title.

Paris Saint-Germain has earned their status as heavy favorites having won eight of the last 10 Ligue 1 titles prior to the 2022-23 campaign. But in 2020-21, Lille was the league champion at preseason odds of over +5000 at many sportsbooks. Going into that year, Paris Saint-Germain was as much as a -1900 favorite, so nothing in sports is guaranteed!

Longshot Ligue 1 Teams Don’t Win

It’s extremely rare that teams in the +5000 range and longer win soccer championships. The lack of a postseason tournament makes it less likely that an underdog team can get hot and win, which occasionally occurs in North American sports. Along with Lille from 2021, the best example of this is Leicester City winning the English Premier League in 2016 with preseason odds of +5000.

Ligue 1 Futures Betting Odds Will Change

You typically can bet on futures as soon as the previous season ends. A variety of factors will influence and change the odds throughout the season. Things that affect futures odds include players joining and leaving a team, injuries, and each team’s performance record.

Ligue 1 Major Events

Ligue 1 follows the format of most top-tier international soccer leagues, such as the English Premier League, and doesn’t crown its champion with a playoff like major North American sports.

Starting with the 2023-24 season, 18 Ligue 1 teams will compete in a double round-robin format, playing each team home and away for a total of 34 games contested from August through May. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. After the final games conclude, the team that has the highest point total is the Ligue 1 champion.

In the event that two or more teams are tied atop the standings, a series of tiebreakers are applied to determine the champion, which four Ligue 1 teams advance to the UEFA Champions League and Europa tournaments, and which three teams are relegated:

  • Goal differential
  • Goals scored

If a tie isn’t broken via these methods, a tiebreaker match is held at a neutral site for the Ligue 1 championship, UEFA qualification, or Ligue 2 relegation.

When to Bet on Ligue 1 Matches

Teams in Ligue 1 typically play once per week. Different betting strategies dictate whether to bet on a match early or wait until closer to kickoff.

If you are really familiar with the teams, you can check the early odds to determine if there is value in a particular outcome. Review how one team has played against the other, recent matchup results, and player injuries. Jumping on a bad line can give you great value before the oddsmakers fix their mistake.

Waiting for the public to play their hand can also create value on the back end. Using this strategy, take note of the opening lines when they come out. Being the most popular sports league in France and also among the biggest worldwide, Ligue 1 generates plenty of betting action. Many of these bets come from casual bettors who are placing bets for fun.

Ligue 1 Betting Odds For Fun

If you’re in it for fun and to win money, consider going against public opinion. Sometimes, contrarian betting can be profitable. Back a team that is getting more favorable odds closer to match time. This means that oddsmakers are trying to entice people to bet on that side because most of the public money is going in the other direction.

Waiting until closer to kickoff also gives you time for any late injuries or other news to develop that could affect the match result. So unless something really stands out to you when the lines for a match are released, you are likely better off waiting to place bets.

Popular Ligue 1 Teams

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain, aka PSG, gets the most exposure by playing in France’s capital city and has been the dominant team in Ligue 1 since it was purchased by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011. From that point through the 2021-22 season, PSG finished no worse than second in Ligue 1.

The team won eight championships in a 10-year span, giving them 10 total, tied for the most in Ligue 1 history. Despite the Ligue 1 success, PSG has not won a UEFA Champions League title. Its sole appearance at the finals was in 2019-20, finishing runner-up to Bayern Munich.

With Qatar Sports Investments at the helm, PSG is one of the richest football clubs in the world. It has the sixth-highest revenue of any soccer team in the world. The club is worth $3.2 billion, which is the seventh-most valuable according to Forbes.

The team has also spent millions in recent years on elite players, including Neymar and Lionel Messi. Neymar, who joined the team in 2017, is fifth on the team’s all-time goal-scorer list with 103 as of the beginning of the 2022-23 season. Edinson Cavani is the all-time leader with 200 goals.

Marseille

Olympique de Marseille, commonly referred to as Marseille, has nine Ligue 1 titles through the 2021-22 season. It has finished runner-up 13 times, including three times to Paris Saint-Germain during their dominant stretch from 2011-22. Marseille’s last Ligue 1 title came in 2009-10. The team has the distinction of being the only French club to win the UEFA Champions League title, which it did in 1992-93.

The club plays in the uniquely shaped Stade Velodrome, Ligue 1’s largest stadium with a capacity of 67,394. Paris’ Stade de France holds more spectators, but it’s only used occasionally and does not have a tenant team. Marseille is the most popular team in Ligue 1, as it’s estimated that one out of every five people living in France roots for “Les Olympiens.”

Lyon

Olympique Lyonnaise, referred to as Lyon (which is the city where they play), is a seven-time Ligue 1 champion and the chief rival of Marseille. Lyon is one of four Ligue 1 teams to have won the season championship four-straight times, part of their record seven-straight titles from the 2001-02 season to 2007-08.

Lyon was the richest team in Ligue 1 prior to PSG staking that claim in 2011. In recent years, Lyon has had success in the UEFA Champions League reaching the semifinal in 2019-20.

Serge Chiesa holds the record for the most matches played with Lyon, totaling 542 from 1969-83. The club’s all-time leading goal scorer is Fleury Di Nallo (222 goals). The active leader is Alexandre Lacazette with 130 goals in 276 appearances.

Monaco

Monaco has eight Ligue 1 titles and is one of two teams to win one during Paris Saint-Germain’s era of dominance, taking home the championship in the 2016-17 season. The club actually plays in the nation of Monaco but is allowed to play in the French soccer system due to the country’s small size.

Monaco reached the 2004 UEFA Champions League final but failed to win, leaving Marseilles as the only French team to have won that competition. The club fell on hard times after 2004 and was eventually relegated to Ligue 2.

In 2011, Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev purchased a stake in the team. Through his financial backing, the team quickly returned to Ligue 1 and has been a strong contender ever since.

The club has had consistent success over the years, winning a Ligue 1 title in each of the last seven decades. The team’s records for appearances and goals have been long-standing. Jean-Luc Ettori holds the appearances record with 602 from 1975-94. The goals-scored record stands at 223, achieved by Delio Onnis in just 232 appearances from 1973-80.

Lille

Despite finishing second to PSG in the 2019-20 Ligue 1 standings, “Les Dougues” (the Mastiffs) were big underdogs when they won the Ligue 1 title the following year. Their 2020-21 victory was their first in a decade and fourth overall. It marked a relatively quick journey to the top, as Lille had to win their final game of the 2017-18 season to avoid relegation.

Lille, which borders Belgium in northernmost France, plays in the 50,000-seat Stade Pierre-Mauroy. The stadium opened in 2012 and is one of the most modern in Ligue 1. The team was founded in 1944 when it was created via a merger of two other clubs. They won their first championship two years later with the second coming in 1953-54.

Lille’s record books are filled with French players. The top five in goals and appearances are all owned by Frenchmen. Marceau Somerlinck (1945-57) holds the appearances record with 428. Jean Baratte (1944-53, 56-57) has the most goals in club history with 218. Both men were a part of Lille’s first league championship.

Do Your Research

It’s estimated that 70% of all of the sports betting that takes place worldwide is wagered on soccer. As we mentioned, Ligue 1 is the third-most-watched soccer league in the world and is the most popular sports league in France. Because of this, oddsmakers are paying close attention to the lines they’re setting. This makes it difficult to find weaknesses or value in a lot of wagers.

To counter this, you need to be as prepared as possible. Watch the matches and follow the news. Pay close attention to injury reports, suspensions, head-to-head records, and team performance in their most recent matches. How a team performed in their last three or four matches could provide more useful information than their statistics for the entire season.

Fortunately, there are plenty of websites with useful handicapping information. Handicapping is the process of studying data to make informed sports betting wagers. Here are some helpful resources:

Know What Home Field Advantage Is Worth

Soccer game scoring is limited. Therefore, any scoring advantage is in your favor. Footy Stats has a page showing which Ligue 1 clubs have home-field advantage each season.

In the 2021-22 season, 18 of the 20 Ligue 1 teams had a home-field advantage when considering the goals they scored versus the goals they allowed. All but two teams scored more goals at home. Just four of the 20 teams allowed more goals at home than they did in away matches. Among all major European soccer leagues, Ligue 1 had the most prominent home-field advantage in the 2021-22 season.

Only Paris Saint-Germain and Stade Rennais FC averaged more than two goals a game last year. So even a small advantage can make a big difference in the outcome of a match.

However, away teams do win. By following these statistics, it can be easier to pinpoint when a team will win on the road. Doing your research and knowing when to take an away team can lead to big wins since the oddsmakers will typically give a bump to the home team.

Exploit Public Bias

Use public biases to increase the value of your bets. Given that 70% of all sports bets in the world are placed on soccer, you can be sure that a great many of them are being made on the favorite team to win.

So, what are the most popular teams? A quick scroll up this page will give you your answer: Paris Saint-Germain is the most dominant, so their matches will receive plenty of attention. Popular clubs like Marseilles and Lyon will also see more betting action from the public than other clubs.

As a result, oddsmakers will nudge odds in favor of teams opposing these clubs. A bet on an opposing team may offer higher value, especially if you determine they have a real chance to win.

For example, PSG lost four and had a draw in eight of their 38 total matches in the 2021-22 season. So it’s possible to get a nice payout if you can forecast a draw or a loss by a top team.

Another popular public bias is on the totals bet. Casual bettors like scoring and want to root for goals. That means they gravitate towards taking the over. However, if your research suggests a lower number of goals than the current totals odds, grab the value that comes with betting on the under.
