Heat survive Celtics/Rondo in OT

It took an extra five minutes but the Miami Heat were able finally turn back the feisty Boston Celtics 115-111 overtime. The Heat got their usual big games from Lebron James 34/10/7 and Dwayne Wade 23/6/4 but it was the role players like Mario Chalmers (22 points), Udonis Haslem 13/11, and Shane Battier that got Miami to the promised land. The Heat came back from a franchise record 15-point deficit to get the win. Rajon Rondo had one of the greatest games in NBA playoff history with 44/8/10.

Start making your NBA Final reservations for Miami and San Antonio. Teams that go up 2-0 in a NBA Conference Final win the series 94% of the time.

The Spurs take their 20-game winning streak into Oklahoma City tonight for Game Three of their Western Conference Final. The Thunder are 3 1/2 point favorites with the total 206.5. San Antonio has won ten of the last 12 in the series including four of the last with at Oklahoma City Arena. The ten wins are by an 8.9 ppg margin. Kings draw first blood on Kopitar OT breakaway

Anze Kopitar scored on a breakaway at 8:13 of the first overtime to lead the Kings to a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Kings are now 13-2 in the playoffs and a perfect 9-0 on enemy ice. Los Angeles’ Colin Fraser “broke the ice” at 9:56 of the first period connecting on a wrist shot that beat Martin Brodeur to his low left pad. Anton Volchenko evened things for New Jersey with about a minute left in the second period. Both teams had chances in the final 20 minutes but neither could seal the deal. Game One was a physically grueling slogfest that produced just 42 shots on goal and little excitement. Game two is Saturday night at Prudential Center.

Marlins now 21-8 in March

Ozzie Guillen is going to have to convince his players that there are 150 days in Mays. After a tough start in April, the Fish have rampaged through May improving to a franchise best 21-8 after taking down the Nats 5-3 in South Beach. Giancarlo “Don’t call me Mike” Stanton hit his 13th home run, his 11th this month … as ace Josh Johnson evened his record at 3-3.

Speaking of 21-8, that was the score of the beat down that Seattle laid on the Texas Rangers Wednesday night. The Mariners clubbed four home runs among their 20 hits, two by ex-Ranger Justin Smoak, as they chased Texas starter Derek Holland after five outs and eight runs. Josh Hamilton had two doubles for the Rangers and has hit safely in 40 of his 47 games this year.

Carlos Gonzalez hit three home runs in the Rockies 13-5 battering of the Houston Astros. Mike Cuddyer and Dexter Fowler also homered for the Rockies. The news was not all good for Colorado as SS Troy Tulowitzki left in the seventh inning with a groin injury that will likely having him spend some time on the DL. The Rockies have also designated (cut) the 49-year-old ancient Mariner, Jamie Moyer.

Hornets get first dibbs at Anthony Davis

It looks like Anthony Davis will be a New Orleans Hornet. With a 13.7% chance of getting the crown jewel of the 2012 NBA draft, the Hornets won last night’s NBA Lottery earning the right to select the consensus No. 1 overall pick in this year’s class, the big man from the University of Kentucky. The Charlotte Bobcats landed the No. 2 selection and the Washington Wizards followed with the No. 3 pick. Davis is considered the only real immediate impact player in this year’s draft with little separating the players likely to be chosen 2-8.

Spurs roll to their 20th straight win

Tony Parker scored 34 points and Manu Ginobli added 20 as the San Antonio Spurs marched to their 20th consecutive win, a 120-111 decision over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The win broke the NBA record of the 2001 Lakers who had 19 consecutive wins bridging the NBA regular season and the playoffs. San Antonio shot a blazing 55% from the field led by Parkers’ 16-21. The Celtics and Heat meet in Game Two of the Eastern Conference Final tonight in South Beach. Miami is an eight-point favorite and the total is locked in at 177. Game One losers are 9-4 ATS in this year’s playoffs after last night’s Spurs win over the Thunder.
