Trifecta Box: Pick any number of horses to finish in the top 3 positions. Final order does not matter.
Do not box every horse! This would be a colossal waste of money. Only 3 can win. Choose the smallest number among the most probable horses.
Trifecta Part Wheel: Select horses to key into each position: first, second and third. Final order does matter. Each key corresponds to a finishing position.
Final finishing order must match one horse from each of your keys.
So far, this year’s Belmont field is 9 horses. That’s just below average. See 20 years of Belmont Stakes averages, stats and trends here.
That means we don’t need as many horses in each key.
Efficiency Matters
Trifecta Boxes are more likely to win because final order does not matter. A box is less efficient than a wheel because you end up buying more combinations than you need.
Trifecta Part Wheels are harder to win because you must select and key horses correctly. However a part wheel is more efficient than a box. You will invest less bankroll to potentially win more money.
2018 Belmont Stakes Trifecta Picks & Advice
I recommend a 4 horse Trifecta Part Wheel, keying 2 horses in the first position, 3 horses in the second position, then 4 horses in the third. Why?
A 4 horse Trifecta Box costs $24, $1 per combination. But a 4 horse Trifecta Part Wheel using my recommendation is only $8, $1 per combination.
Reusing the same horse in multiple keys decreases the number of winning combinations. That means your bet costs less money. Also, keeping the most probable horses in the first and second keys avoids paying for the long-shots.
You’ll be making a more efficient bet with higher profit potential. And you’ll be way ahead of the clowns betting their rent money on Justify! Yes, it’s happened. 😉
How to Key Horses in a Trifecta Part Wheel
Let’s assemble our Trifecta Part Wheel keys from the table above.
As of writing, Justify is the odds-on favorite. He’s currently 4/5 or -125. Put him in all 3 keys.
Now let’s pick one more horse for the first key. Also add this horse to your 2nd and 3rd keys.
Vino Rosso finished 9th in the Kentucky Derby. This after a victory in the G1 Wood Memorial on April 7, 2018 at Aqueduct. Before that, he was 4th at the G2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 10, 2018 and 3rd at the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes on February 10, 2018.
Next, we’ll add a third horse to our 2nd key. Also put this horse in the 3rd key.
Tenfold was 3rd at the Preakness. Previously he finished 5th at Oaklawn Park’s G1 Arkansas Derby on April 14, 2018. Additionally, he won a March 18 Allowance and February 9 MSW (Maiden Special Weight).
Tenfold could be the proverbial “Dark Horse”. He hasn’t raced as much as his competitors. And his workouts have been progressing with this peak race in mind.
Finally we’ll add a 4th and final horse to our 3rd key.
Bravazo was 2nd at the Preakness and 6th at the Kentucky Derby. Before that he was 8th at the G2 Lousiana Derby on March 24, 2018. His last win was the G2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on February 17, 2018.
