Point Spread Explained

A point spread bet is made on the expected score difference. The point spread line attempts to equalize two mismatched competitors. Favorite teams give points to the underdog. The underdog takes points from the favorite.

The conference tournaments, March Madness, and the National Invitational tournament are all major events. That means the sportsbooks will have a multitude of betting options available. In some cases, they’ll offer the balanced point spread, or “main betting line”, in addition to alternate betting lines.

Sports betting sites will post lines and odds for upcoming matchups as tournament officials schedule them. Keep your eye on the numbers. They’ll likely change quite a bit as tip-off approaches. Unlike the regular season where games are scheduled out weeks in advance, you’ll often only have 1-2 days between tournament rounds to size up a bet.

Finally, sportsbooks commonly offer point spreads for the game, 1st half, and 2nd half. Some big March Madness games like the National Championship have may quarter spreads at select sportsbooks.

Placing a Point Spread Bet

Select “Point Spread” from your sportsbook’s betting menu. Next, select a game segment: game, 1st half, 2nd half, or quarter. Finally, select either the favorite or the underdog.

Pick the Favorite or the Underdog

Taking the Underdog
Underdogs have a plus sign next to their point spread line. An underdog bet wins if the final score difference is less than the spread. A +5.5 point underdog must win outright or not lose by more than 6 points.

Taking the Favorite
Favorites have a minus sign next to their point spread line. A bet on the favorite wins if the final score difference is greater than the spread. A -6 point favorite must win by 7 or more for your bet to win. If the final score difference is exactly 6 points, the result pushes and the sportsbook will refund your wager.

How to Bet on March Madness Point Spreads

Time needed: 3 minutes

How to bet on March Madness Point Spreads

  1. Tap to the sportsbook’s College Basketball page, look for the matchup you want to bet on.

Navigate to the sportsbook’s College Basketball page. Look for live or upcoming matchups. Your sportsbook may have a special “College Basketball Tournament” bracket or lineup.

  2. Choose the point spread, game segment, and place your wager.

Sportsbooks will display March Madness game point spreads by default. Tap through the wagering menu to find 1st half, 2nd half, or quarter point spread lines.

  3. The odds values next to the point spread line indicate risk and win amounts.

-110, or standard odds, means you risk $110 to win $100. Minus values indicate how much you risk to win $100. Plus values indicate how much you win if you risk $100.

  4. Your bet wins if your team wins against the spread during the game segment you specified.

The underdog wins if they win outright, tie the favorite, or lose by a margin less than the point spread. The favorite wins if they win by a margin greater than the point spread. Review the result of each half or quarter if you bet a half or quarter point spread.

  5. Your bet ties or pushes if the winning margin equals the point spread.

Your bet pushes and will be refunded if the winning margin equals the point spread. For example, a bet on a -9 favorite who wins by exactly 9 points would push.
