If you’re unfamiliar with bets and don’t understand NFL betting as a whole, there are a lot of resources that will help improve your baseline knowledge. With a good NFL betting guide, you can learn the basics before diving into player props.

If you’re already well-versed in NFL knowledge, let’s proceed with this breakdown of NFL player props.

Player Props Breakdown

This is market is individual-based, rather than team-based like the moneyline or spread.

Oddsmakers typically develop lines in the form of an Over/Under. That means oddsmakers create a line and bettors choose whether a player will perform better or worse than that number.

There will typically be even odds when both sides of the bet have the same risk and reward. These odds may be expressed as EV on a betting ticket. For example, $10 wager would pay out exactly $10.

Let’s take a look at what some different examples of player props would look like.

How Oddsmakers Create NFL Prop Bets

Oddsmakers will create lines for everything from rushing yards and touchdowns, to receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns. Typically, only skill position players will have player props.

This means you’re only likely to find props based on statistics that are relevant to Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, and Tight Ends. However, some operators provide odds for defensive players like tackles, interceptions, and sacks.

NFL Prop Bet Examples

The first game of the 2021-22 NFL season features the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers facing off against the Dallas Cowboys. While the odds for player props haven’t been released yet, it’ll serve as our example. For that game, a prop bet might be Tom Brady over/under 2.5 passing touchdowns. Bettors would have to decide whether they think Brady will throw 3+ touchdowns, or 2 or fewer touchdowns when choosing over or under.

It is important to note that it is just passing touchdowns. If Brady sneaks in a touchdown, it doesn’t count towards the bet’s result.

Another example would be Amari Cooper over/under 74.5 yards receiving. Bettors would have to decide whether they believe that Amari Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys receiver, will have 75+ yards, or 74 yards or less receiving.

Keep in mind it is receiving yards only. If Cooper goes for a long rush, it doesn’t add to the total.

NFL Player Prop Takeaways

Player props might sound more complicated than they really are.

To make a long story short, player props are odds on individual player stats. Oddsmakers create a line for an estimated result. Bettors choose to bet over or under the line.

With the NFL season fast approaching, bettors are gearing up for a season of wild betting and great football. Hopefully, you’ve learned more about player prop betting is and why it makes NFL betting more fun and exciting.
