It's time for the second event of the famed Triple Crown: The Preakness Stakes. Hosted year after year at Pimlico racecourse in Maryland, the Preakness Stakes has earned its place in history as one of the finest sporting events of the year, action packed and full of anticipation. If you thought the Kentucky Derby was good, just wait until the starting gates open for this year's running of the Preaknesss Stakes.
In well over 130 years of racing history, Pimlico's Preakness Stakes has been host to some of the most memorable horse racing events in history. Famous horses like Sea Biscuit, Thunder, Man O' War, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and countless others have pounded their way down the track all in search of the Preakness Stakes prize, an elusive and challenging feat that makes the annual competition thrilling.
Over the years, Pimlico racecourse has had its ups and downs. During an anti-gambling era in 1910, Maryland and Kentucky were the only states to hold on to their horse racing traditions. Pimlico barely survived this period, but rallied around the 1920's as it continued to host the Preakness Stakes, now officially run at Pimlico. In the 1930's, the depression and dust bowl made for a draught in the horse racing industry. Horse owners, jockeys, trainers, along with horse racing fans were faced with a dismal economy and little money to go around. As the depression waned, however, horse racing slowly crawled back to its former glory, and the Preakness Stakes never lost its charm.
Pimlico's racecourse is also the notorious second leg of the Triple Crown. Fresh off a race at Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby winner must let fly again at Pimlico, in hopes of grabbing the Preakness Stakes honors and part two of the Triple Crown. At this race, nothing is ever predictable: over the years, Preakness Stakes betting has seen dramatic wins, surprising upsets, and huge cash purses with more money than anyone could imagine.
